Report: Ryan Tannehill is Panthers’ true target; teams think Cam Newton is gone

The Carolina Panthers are one of the biggest wild cards of the 2020 NFL offseason, thanks to their situation with quarterback Cam Newton.

On Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Panthers are planning on moving forward with Newton as the starting quarterback. Attending the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report shared Wednesday that many teams around the NFL aren’t buying that, however.

“That may end up being the case, but teams I speak to don’t buy it,” Freeman wrote in his weekly 10-point stance column. “They believe the Panthers are going to pursue a QB in free agency, and the name I keep hearing is Ryan Tannehill.

“The Panthers, goes the thinking around the league, are playing a nice game of poker and aren’t close to settling on Newton.”

Officially, the Panthers have made it clear that no decision will be made on Newton until he’s fully healthy. That milestone is set to take place soon, and perhaps we’ll have some real clarity on the situation when he is cleared for football activities.

The 2015 league MVP is still one of the best the league has to offer when healthy. It’s going to be fascinating to see how this all unfolds.
