The NFL currently has several teams experiencing a high dose of quarterback drama so far this offseason. Free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets definitely rank near the top of this list due to the impasse between the two parties regarding a potential new deal for Fitz.
The situation has gotten so tense that Fitzpatrick has threatened to sit out the season rather than play for the low-ball deal the Jets have on the table.
Though, according to Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports, word is Fitzpatrick will not be retiring.
“Fitzpatrick’s friends around the league aren’t buying the fact that he might retire. They know he loves playing for offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, and it’s beyond time he tells agent Jimmy Sexton to work out the best one-year they can and sign.”
This would be best all-around for both sides. Fitzpatrick is clearly the top option amongst an unappealing cast of current quarterbacks consisting of Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and newly drafted Christian Hackenberg.
Fitz thrived under Gailey last season posting career high numbers in both passing yards (3,905) and touchdowns (31). The chemistry between Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker was remarkable. The addition of pass-catching running back Matt Forte only further beautifies this picture.
Eventually, Fitzpatrick is going to have to settle for less than elite pay. No other teams are biting for his asking price. And, other than a commendable 2015 season, Fitz doesn’t have a whole lot of bargaining power.
Perhaps a pep talk from Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford, who realized unsubstantiated threats don’t exactly pan out, is in order.
