Richard Sherman has never been shy about standing up for his fellow players and blasting the NFL. However, the San Francisco 49ers cornerback will reportedly not run to be the next president of the NFL Players’ Association, per ESPN’s Josina Anderson.
Sherman, who called out the NFL for pretending to care about player safety, has been one of the most vocal players opposed to the NFL’s new proposal for a collective-bargaining agreement.
The 31-year-old cornerback is coming off one of the best seasons in his NFL career. But despite his history of going after the NFL, including for its lack of diversity among head coaches, the Stanford graduate seems uninterested in becoming the lead voice among players in the NFLPA at this time.
Russell Okung, Sherman’s former teammate, is the only known candidate running to replace Eric Winston for the position. The Carolina Panthers offensive tackle has been vocal about fighting for fully guaranteed contracts for his peers in the past.
As NFL players near a vote on the new CBA, with plenty at stake for current and former players, they must also vote on a new NFLPA president by Thursday.
