Report: Pablo Sandoval might need shoulder surgery

Pablo Sandoval might be out of commission for quite some time. The third baseman hurt his shoulder and was placed on the 15-day disabled list, but after MRI results came back Friday it’s looking like surgery is a possibility, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe.

Sandoval showed up to spring training out of shape and overweight. He then lost his starting job at third base to Travis Shaw as weight issues continued to plague him on the field. His infamous belt-snapping swing earned him a wicked burn from a Blue Jays fan, and now we’ve hit another massive bump in the road for Boston’s $19 million dollar man.

Surgery would almost certainly put any trade talks to bed as well. Sandoval has been linked to the San Diego Padres, who currently don’t have anyone of quality at the hot corner. But taking him before the injury was already sort of risky, considering his salary and persistent weight issues.

The risk at this point would be too great.

Sandoval has gone hitless in six at-bats this year. At this point, it’s beginning to look like the 2016 season will be one to forget.
