Report: Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald will not pursue NFL job

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald remains one of the most-respected college football coaches in the nations.

It’s led to speculation that he might bolt for the NFL soon. In fact, the Green Bay Packers had hoped to interview him for their vacancy.

According to Fitzgerald’s agent, Bryan Harlan, that’s not going to happen. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport noted that Harlan told him that the Wildcats’ head coach will not be a candidate for any vacancy in the pros.

This is becoming somewhat of a common theme. With college coaching pay inching closer to the NFL ranks, there’s not as much of an incentive for coaches to make the jump.

Fitzgerald, 44, has been Northwestern’s head man since all the way back in 2006. He’s led the program to a bowl appearance in nine of the past 11 seasons and is coming off an appearance in the Big 10 Championship Game.

Needless to say, Fitzgerald seems happy where he’s at.
