Report: NFL salary cap could exceed $179 million in 2018

The NFL salary cap number is expected to take another big leap for the 2018 season. Last year, teams had $168 million to spend. Now a new report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk pushes that number closer to $180 million ahead of the upcoming campaign.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the cap will at least be $178 million. It also could exceed $179 million,” Florio wrote Sunday.

Of course, the big reason the salary cap is rising so much right now is that television revenue is coming in like crazy. Despite a decline in ratings, the NFL is still raking in money hand over fist. Leading us to once again poke fun at the notion that the NFL is somehow in trouble due to a lack of interest.

The swell in cap space will make signing those expensive franchise quarterbacks to their lucrative contracts much more bearable. It’ll also help the Pittsburgh Steelers sign running back Le’Veon Bell to the big deal he seeks.

In general, it’s just a really good sign for the league’s top-end players.
