Report: ‘Over a month’ since Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets last talked

It’s really starting to look like Geno Smith will be under center as the New York Jets starting quarterback when training camp gets going in just over a week.

As most of you likely already know, the Jets are in the midst of a contract stalemate with free-agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. It’s a situation that has drawn headlines over the past several weeks with the two sides appearing to be far apart in negotiations.

Up until just recently, the widespread expectation was that the two sides would come together on some sort of an agreement prior to the start of camp.

That no longer appears to be the case.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Fitzpatrick and the Jets have not even talked to one another in over a month.

There’s a whole heck of a lot to digest here.

It’s looking more and more like one side is going to have to give in for an agreement to be finalized. Considering they haven’t talked in over a month, that seems highly unlikely.

At last check, the Jets’ most-recent offer was $12 million per season over three years. Though, only one year of that deal was said to be guaranteed — pretty much making it a one-year offer (more on that here).

For his part, Fitzpatrick is looking for a multi-year deal with guarantees beyond the first season. That right there seems to be the major hiccup in the now stalled negotiations.

Throw in the fact that negotiations had previously been reported to be on the ugly side, and there’s a lot for fans to worry about here.

Fitzpatrick, 33, is coming off a career-best performance in 2015 that saw him put up 3,905 passing yards with 31 touchdowns en route to leading the Jets to 10 wins.

If the veteran remains unsigned into the latter part of camp, the Jets have already made it clear that they will move on from him.

Unfortunately for fans in New Jersey, that means Smith will likely find himself under center when Week 1 comes calling.
