Report: Mike Shanahan to meet with 49ers for HC job

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Shanahan is headed to Santa Clara to meet with the San Francisco 49ers, per Diana Marie Russini of ESPN. Though a meeting on Wednesday was first reported, those plans were temporarily put on hold.

The former head coach of the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins brings decades of experience to the table and is an offensive-minded coach who should command the respect of any locker room.

Shanahan was being considered for the position last year as well, but Jim Tomsula was ultimately handed the job. One might wonder if Trent Baalke and Shanahan would get along, being that both are strong personalities, but the 49ers have already navigated these waters before with success during the Jim Harbaugh era.

The 49ers are looking for a coach that can win Super Bowls, and Shanahan fits the bill. He guided the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1998 and 1999 and knows how to get the most out of an offense.

Shanahan has taken a couple years off since leaving Washington in 2013, so he should be fired up and ready to lead a new franchise to glory.
