Syndergaard hasn’t had the greatest of success this season with a 4.33 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 20 starts. However, the 26-year-old has flashed elite stuff throughout his career and many teams around the league likely believe their coaching staff could help him return to his top form.
Wheeler has reportedly been on the trade block for weeks, but a recent stint on the injured list with a shoulder impingement and his expiring contract have limited his trade value. He holds a 4.69 ERA this season, but excelled last season with a 3.31 ERA.
New York would likely lose Wheeler when he hits free agency, so this option could be the best-case scenario for the front office if they can execute it properly. Given how the season has unfolded, it’s tough for New York’s fan base to have any confidence that happens.
