The Cincinnati Bengals are finally going to move on from head coach Marvin Lewis, who’s reportedly coaching his last game Sunday.
That’s the news shared by Jay Glazer on “FOX NFL Sunday” before Week 17’s slate of games kicked off.
Glazer reported “it looks like this will be his last year in Cincinnati.”
Of course, this is what was being thrown around last year, too. Lewis was said to be leaning toward leaving the Bengals but ended up signing an extension, instead. So, we’ll believe it when we see it.
Lewis’ legacy is tainted due to his proclivity for enabling players with significant red flags, both on and off the field. His continued support for cornerback Adam Jones (a string of off-field incidents) and linebacker Vontaze Burfict (the NFL’s dirtiest player) are two of the most memorable examples in recent years.
On the field, the Bengals have been one of the NFL’s most consistent franchises during Lewis’ tenure, which began way back in 2003. Unfortunately, they’ve been consistently mediocre, or worse.
If this really is his last year in Cincinnati, Lewis exits without ever having won a single playoff game, and heading into Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh he has a career record of 131-121-3. Additionally, win or lose on Sunday, Lewis’ Bengals haven’t won more than seven games since the 2015 season.
