Report: Marlins close to landing Fernando Rodney from Padres

Bullpen help may be on the way for the Miami Marlins in short order. According to ESPN’s Keith Law, the Marlins are close to landing Fernando Rodney in a trade with the San Diego Padres.

This sure seems like a good move for Miami. Even a “good A-Ball prospect” is still a project and likely at least a few years from the majors. Rodney has been a stellar reliever for the Marlins this year, posting a 0.31 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. He’s also tallied 17 saves.

Miami’s bullpen has firmly been in the “good but not great” category this season. The addition of Rodney will go a long way in changing that. Rodney will likely slide right into the closer role, moving A.J. Ramos into the setup spot.

If we read between the lines, this move might also signal more activity from the Marlins. Trading for a 39-year-old certainly indicates that the team is going all-in on the 2016 season.
