To nobody’s surprise, Kurt Rambis will likely remain a member of the New York Knicks as an assistant to head coach Jeff Hornacek.
According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, the Knicks are currently in negotiations with Rambis towards that end. Rambis still has one year remaining on his current contract, but the two sides agreed to work out a new financial arrangement.
Begley further notes that Rambis is not being forced on Hornacek. Rather, this is a mutually agreed-upon arrangement.
“‘Nothing is being forced down Jeff’s neck,’ one source with knowledge of the dynamic said, in reference to the idea that team president Phil Jackson would force Hornacek to hire Rambis,” Begley writes.
Because Rambis knows Phil Jackson’s triangle offense, this is a natural fit. While Hornacek has made it clear the team will not run a pure triangle offense, the Knicks will incorporate aspects of this particular scheme. In this, Rambis will be an invaluable tool for Hornacek.
Jackson said Rambis, “has a great idea of what we’re trying to get accomplished and I think he can help Jeff feel his way through this club and find the best way to play.”
On the surface, it’s hard to get excited about what New York has done thus far in the offseason. It’s also hard to imagine many top free agents are looking at the combination of Rambis and Hornacek as a desirable combination.
There is always a chance they will shock the world next season. But consider us less than enthused.
