New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles may have tipped his team’s NFL draft hand in a conference call with season-ticket holders on Thursday, according to Dom Cosentino of NJ.com.
Bowles had this to say:
Ryan [Fitzpatrick is] going to compete, as well as Geno [Smith is] going to compete. And we hope to add somebody else to help compete with that along with [Matt] Simms.
He could mean via free-agency, where very few viable starting options remain. Or, he could mean in the draft, where he and the Jets hold the sixth pick on April 30. Bowles attended Florida State’s Pro Day to see quarterback Jameis Winston work out, as were general manager Mike Maccagnan and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.
Does that mean Bowles, Maccagnan and company will pull the trigger on Winston, or even former Oregon signal-caller Marcus Mariota, if either are available at No. 6? Not exactly. But it does sound like the franchise is leaning toward that decision should it become an option on draft day.
