Report: Jay Cutler interested in playing for the Dolphins

Jay Cutler

We’re not too sure whether the Miami Dolphins will look at the veteran market for a free agent quarterback. The team saw starter Ryan Tannehill go down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury on Thursday. Initial reports suggested that it might be a torn ACL. And while initial returns show that Tannehill avoided structural damage to the knee, further tests are needed.

As the Dolphins take a wait-and-see approach regarding their franchise quarterback, they are being linked to two of the biggest names on the market.

Of course, no conversation surrounding free agent signal callers can be concluded without the mention of Colin Kaepernick. In fact, the Dolphins at least kicked the tires on the embattled veteran following Tannehill’s injury (more on that here).

It now looks like yet another veteran might be willing to delay his post-football career to sign with the Dolphins.

“Sources said that Jay Cutler would be willing to delay his broadcast career at Fox in order to play for Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who helped him revitalize his career when he was the QB’s offensive coordinator in 2015,” ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported Thursday.

There’s definitely a caveat here. Cutler would reportedly only entertain a return to the gridiron if he were guaranteed to start for an entire season, earning starter money in the process. Depending on the severity of Tannehill’s injury, that’s unlikely to be in the cards in Miami.

If Cutler does not return to football, he will join Fox as a broadcaster for NFL games this season.

The interesting dynamic here is that Cutler, who seemingly retired during the spring, never officially filed paperwork with the NFL. That could make an about-face much easier for the veteran quarterback.

It will definitely be intriguing to see what comes of this moving forward.
