A lot has been made about the possibility of Boston Celtics star guard Kyrie Irving landing with the New York Knicks.
Despite the Knicks’ struggles on the court, New York City is still seen as the Mecca of the basketball world.
Most recently, Irving’s potential destinations in free agency this coming July have included the Brooklyn Nets. Seen as closer to contending and with a much better front office structure, Brooklyn is expected to be players for star talent during the summer.
The same can’t really be said for a drama-filled Los Angeles Lakers team. In fact, LeBron James is concerned said drama might limit Los Angeles’ ability to add a star player.
Now, according to this report from Ric Bucher of Fox Sports 1 and Bleacher Report, it’s between the Nets and Lakers for Irving’s services.
Bucher also notes that Kobe Bryant has been recruiting Irving to Los Angeles while the star guard has bought a house in Jersey.
There’s certainly a lot to take in here. But here’s the specifics.
- It was previously noted that Irving might be open to a reunion with LeBron James. If that’s the case, James and the Lakers could make sense.
- Irving buying a home in Jersey is not necessarily indicative of him signing with the Nets. After all, the Knicks seemingly remain an option.
- For their part, the Nets have been linked to a plethora of big names. That includes Irving, Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler and Anthony Davis.
We’re going to hear a whole lot about Irving’s potential destination over the next five weeks or so. But until then, it really does look like both the Nets and Lakers have a real shot at landing the NBA champ.
