Encarnacion had been a member of the Toronto Blue Jays since 2009. In 2016, he slugged 42 home runs, drove in an American League high 127 runs and slashed at .263/.357/.529.
He will be 34 on opening day in 2017 and figures to bat in the middle of the lineup for the American League champs, likely replacing fellow free agent Mike Napoli.
