Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has been under investigation by the NFL for over one year now after an ex-girlfriend alleged he abused her. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there is a “growing sense” that Elliott will face a short suspension stemming from that incident, despite the fact he was cleared of charges by police.
“I think there is a growing sense that he could face some sort of short suspension here in the coming weeks at some point once the NFL wraps up its investigations. It is not over yet, but it is definitely far along into the process,” Schefter said on SportsCenter. “Ezekiel Elliott still has to respond to the NFL’s recent findings. The NFL has given him some report, and at some point in the coming weeks, Ezekiel Elliott will respond to the report that is sent to him. But I think that Ezekiel Elliott is bracing for a short suspension here in the coming weeks, and we’ll see how that impacts the season.”
Schefter notes that the Cowboys open with the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos — a couple of teams that could give them trouble right off the bat, even with Elliott in the lineup. If he’s not there, then Dallas could be in danger of falling into an 0-2 hole to start the season.
Clearly the NFL is doing its best to wipe away the perception that domestic violence allegations are a trivial matter.
