Report: Giants could target Jim Schwartz as next head coach

Jim Schwartz

The New York Giants are looking for a man with extensive experience to replace Ben McAdoo as the next head coach of the storied franchise. And now we have a name — Jim Schwartz — that matches that description and has some ties to the people in charge of making the call.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Schwartz has a solid chance of being the next coach in the Big Apple. Florio cites the relationship Schwartz has to team consultant (and former general manager) Ernie Accorsi, who has reportedly been told by none other than Bill Belichick that Schwartz is the right man for the job.

“The name that keeps coming up in this regard is Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Although Schwatz and Gettleman have never worked together, the Accorsi connection would be the thing that puts them on the same page. Beyond Schwartz and Accorsi having a common tie to Maryland, it’s believed that Accorsi leans heavily on advice from Patriots coach Bill Belichick. It’s also believed that Belichick has advised Accorsi to recommend that Gettleman hire Schwartz.”

Florio isn’t the only person to identify Schwartz for the job, either. Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com also noted the current Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator, along with the team’s quarterback coach, John DeFilippo, could be targeted to become New York’s next head coach.

Schwartz has plenty of experience. He’s been involved with scouting and coaching at the NFL level since 1993 and was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2009-2013. He’s most famous for his post-game scrap with Jim Harbaugh when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Lions at Ford Field back in 2011.

The Giants have already seemingly committed to Eli Manning for at least one more year, so bringing in a defensive-minded head coach makes a little bit of sense there. However, the team has to be thinking about the future, which involves building up a new franchise passer, who’ll need a talented offensive mind to help guide him. This coaching search will be very interesting to follow, because the Giants absolutely cannot afford another whiff like they had with McAdoo.
