Former North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky might have teams fighting over him come NFL draft day, as four teams have reportedly “zeroed in” on him.
“At various points in the past week, four NFL evaluators told Yahoo Sports (adamantly) that different teams had zeroed in on Trubisky as their pick,” wrote Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. “One suggested Trubisky would be Cleveland’s choice, another pegged San Francisco and two others insisted Trubisky would end up in Chicago or Buffalo.”
Indeed, all four quarterbacks have been linked to at least the notion of being interested in drafting a quarterback at the top of the draft.
The Cleveland Browns obviously has the No. 1 pick, and general manager Sashi Brown said Wednesday that the team feels very comfortable about who they’re taking at that pick.
The San Francisco 49ers, picking at No. 2, are reportedly “desperate” to move down out of that spot. But in that same report it’s indicated that, if they do have to use that selection rather than trading it away, Trubisky would be their guy.
The Chicago Bears have been reportedly eyeballing Deshaun Watson and would even consider trading up for him. Though, with the No. 3 overall pick we’re pretty sure he’d be there if that’s the guy they want to pick. Unless, of course, they’re looking at moving back up into the first round after selecting at No. 3. Don’t rule out this report about Watson as a smokescreen to mask their interest in Trubisky, even after having brought in Mike Glennon.
Then there’s the Buffalo Bills, a team that isn’t hiding its desire to bring in a long-term replacement for Tyrod Taylor. The same Bills team that reportedly advised Trubisky about his decision to either go back to school or enter the draft.
Regardless of where he ends up, it’s pretty clear Trubisky is going to be the top quarterback taken in the 2017 NFL Draft.
One has to believe he’d be better off heading to a team that is comfortable letting an established veteran play the 2017 season, rather than being thrown to the wolves right out of the gate. He started just 13 games in college and has a lot of learning to do before he’s ready to step into that leadership role at the NFL level.
