Report: Florida State expects Jimbo Fisher to leave for Texas A&M

Jimbo Fisher

Despite the school’s president recently noting that he would do everything possible to retain Jimbo Fisher, it’s looking more and more like Florida State will lose the long-time head football coach.

Fisher has been linked to the Texas A&M job since Kevin Sumlin was fired following the Aggies’ regular season finale.

Now, according to this report from Joe Reedy of the Associated Press, the Seminoles expect Fisher to leave for College Station should he formally receive an offer from A&M.

“A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that they think Fisher will leave Florida State for Texas A&M and that the school has started the process of vetting potential candidates,” Reedy reported. “They spoke on condition of anonymity because neither Texas A&M nor Florida State has publicly discussed details of the Aggies coaching search.”

At the most, this would be seen as a lateral move for Fisher. Though, money itself speaks volumes here, and Texas A&M is apparently willing to offer Fisher a whole heck of a lot of it.

Fisher has overseen the Noles’ football program since Bobby Bowden retired prior to the 2010 season. He’s led the team to an 83-23 mark heading into this week’s season finale. Florida State has fallen on hard times this season — needing a win Saturday against  Louisiana-Monroe to avoid not being bowl eligible for the first time since 1976.

If Fisher were to take over the Aggies job, his initial goal would be to turn around a program that’s 7-5 this season and has not finished in the top 10 since the 2012 campaign.
