As MLB tries to find a way to play baseball this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the dangers of the sport returning became apparent this week. Afew weeks after returning to the team’s training facility, multiple Philadelphia Phillies players have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, five Phillies’ players tested positive for the coronavirus in recent days. Furthermore, three of the team’s staff members also contracted the virus.

The team just recently reopened their Spectrum Field facility after MLB started lifting its COVID-19 restrictions. Over the past few weeks, the Phillies have slowly brought back more players to train at the team’s complex in Florida.

While five players and eight staff have tested positive for COVID-19, the numbers could be even higher. According to NBC Sports, the team is still awaiting a significant number of test results and there is some concern this could be an even larger outbreak.

At this time, none of the personnel who contracted the coronavirus have required hospitalization and their symptoms don’t appear to be severe.

While MLB leaked this past week that several players and staff tested positive for COVID-19, these are the first known cases publicly.
