The Atlanta Falcons may be in the driver’s seat in the NFC South with a 6-4 record, but the team will reportedly be without one of their best players for the remainder of the season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pro Bowl corner Desmond Trufant is expected to require season-ending surgery on a torn pectoral he suffered back in Week 9.

This is an absolutely huge blow for a Falcons team that has been requiring Trufant to shut down one side of the field throughout his tremendous four-year NFL career.

Thus far this season, the former first-round pick has recorded 30 tackles, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and an interception. He’s also considered one of the top-five cover guys in the NFL.

Since suffering the injury, Trufant hasn’t been the same player. It’s now readily apparent why he’s regressed as of late.

With Trufant out of action, the Falcons will be left relying on a pass defense that entered Week 12 yielding the most yards in the NFL. It will surely be interesting to see how this unit responds from here on out.
