Report: Earl Thomas Not Ready for Training Camp, Could Miss Regular Season Opener

Recovering from a torn labrum, Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas could reportedly miss all of training camp and even the start of the regular season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this news, via Ed Werder, who spoke with Thomas about his injury.

Thomas is the league’s premier safety. Nobody covers the field better than him, and though he does possess a diminutive stature at five-foot-10, he attacks ball-carriers with the power of a charging bull.

In his first five seasons as a pro out of the University of Texas, Thomas has earned four Pro-Bowl berths and has been named to the 1st-Team All-Pro squad three times.

He’s the heart and soul of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense—no offense intended to Richard Sherman—and will be greatly missed on the back end if he isn’t ready to play to start the season.

DeShawn Shead, a fourth-year pro, is listed as Thomas’ backup and would have some big shoes to fill. Given the outstanding track record of the Seahawks when faced with injuries in the secondary, however, there’s a chance this defense won’t skip a beat.
