Report: Eagles trade WR Torrey Smith to the Panthers

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been out here asking for wide receiver help this week. The team has now apparently done just that.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Carolina has acquired wide receiver Torrey Smith from the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for cornerback Daryl Worley.

It’s a rare player-for-player swap with no draft picks changing hands. Though, the move seems to fill holes for both squads.

Smith signed a three-year, $15 million deal with Philadelphia last offseason. In his only season with the team, the speedy veteran recorded 36 receptions for 430 yards and two touchdowns. He was slated to count $5 million against the Eagles’ cap next season.

As it relates to Worley, he’s seen as an up-and-coming young cornerback in the league. In just his second NFL season, the former Virginia Tech standout recorded 63 tackles, 10 passes defended and two interceptions. With Patrick Robinson slated to become a free agent, cornerback was definitely a need for Philadelphia. This move also helps the cash-strapped Eagles save north of $4 million in cap room.
