As part of an ongoing investigation into whether or not Johnny Manziel physically assaulted ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley, the Dallas Police Department reportedly acquired her medical records, per Pat McManamon of ESPN.
The medical records could either corroborate or disprove Crowley’s claims that Manziel’s actions ruptured her eardrum, among other things. Per the report, Crowley still could not hear out of her left ear as of a week ago.
If the investigation does culminate with charges against Manziel, the penalties could be stiff:
“In Texas, causing serious injury could be considered aggravated assault, which is a felony. The penalty for a conviction for a second-degree felony is two to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000,” McManamon wrote.
As has been roundly proclaimed by all who have been covering Manziel for some time, whether or not he is suited to play football is of secondary concern at this time.
With a history of alcohol-related issues and a growing list of domestic disputes between himself and Crowley, the young man is clearly dealing with issues that go far beyond the scope of sports. His own father worries that Manziel will not live to see his 24th birthday if he does not get the help he needs.
The Cleveland Browns are expected to release Manziel on March 9 when the new league year begins. He certainly would have already been cut if not for the team’s salary-cap restrictions. At this point it seems highly unlikely he will be picked up by any team in free agency.
