As the Dallas Cowboys continue to try and stay alive atop the NFC East and rumors swirl surrounding coach Jason Garrett’s long-term status, things could have gone quite differently if the Cowboys reportedly got their way this past offseason.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Dallas reached out to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, through back channels, to express their interest in him. While Payton considered it, he then used the Cowboys’ interest to land a massive contract extension.

It’s another unfortunate blow for a fan base that has experienced continued frustration in owner Jerry Jones’ willingness to stick by Garrett for so many years despite the team’s lack of playoff success.

Now with Payton off the table and Garrett almost certainly destined to be fired after the season, fans will be hoping that Jones can land someone like Urban Meyer or Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.
