New York Jets star safety Jamal Adams has been the subject of trade rumors for months with the Dallas Cowboys viewed as the perfect landing spot. Unfortunately for Cowboys fans, it appears a trade for the All-Pro safety isn’t happening.
Adams and the Jets are in a contract stalemate over the 24-year-old’s desire for an extension. However, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Adams also under contract for two seasons, the Jets have no plans to trade him. Even if the organization changed its stance, it seems the Cowboys aren’t all that interested in a trade.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys aren’t interested in trading for Adams this summer. While Jerry Jones would love to add one of the NFL’s best safeties to the secondary, the Cowboys are focused on signing one of their own top players to an extension.
“From my understanding, there is really nothing there from the Cowboys’ perspective,” Ian Rapoport said, via NFL Network. “First of all, they need to take care of Dak Prescott first, their franchise quarterback. Not going to come in, sign another player to a huge deal before Dak, that’s not going to happen.”
The Cowboys already awarded huge extensions to Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper before even applying the franchise tag to Prescott. The organization isn’t going to make the mistake of trading for a player seeking a massive contract and letting Adams jump in line ahead of Prescott.
Dallas is in the middle of negotiations with their franchise quarterback, which is the team’s top priority. Given those talks will last into the summer, before they either agree to a deal or Prescott plays under the franchise tag, trading for Adams isn’t an option right now.
If Prescott is signed and Adams remains unhappy in New York during the season, things could change. Of course, the Cowboys would then need to meet New York’s high price to acquire the All-Pro safety.
