Previous suggestions that the Arizona Cardinals might double down at the quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft were pretty much quieted by the team’s front office just recently.
Having selected Josh Rosen No. 10 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, that seemed to make a ton of sense.
Though, Arizona’s willingness to publicly engage on the reports and first-year head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s previous comments regarding Murray have kept these rumors alive.
With all 32 teams converging on Indianapolis for the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine this week, news from the league is coming fast and furious.
That includes renewed reports that the Cardinals are in fact targeting the reigning Heisman winner with the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft.
“In fact, many NFL sources, from scouts to agents to team executives, told SNY at the NFL Scouting Combine this week that they believe the Cardinals really are targeting Murray with the No. 1 overall pick. None of them knew for sure, obviously, and the Cards braintrust wasn’t ready to tip its hand,” Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reported on Friday.
Vacchiano also noted that the New York Giants would have interest in trading for the above-mentioned Rosen should Arizona land Murray in April.
Any move of this ilk would have wide-ranging implications come draft time. Selecting No. 2 overall, the San Francisco 49ers are open to trading down. If Murray were off the board, another quarterback-needy team would then come calling to pick up Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals would have to gauge trade interest in Rosen and what value they might receive in return.
This is definitely a fun scenario to look at.
