Report: Cam Newton ‘absolutely’ believes he will be with Panthers in 2020

Cam Newton release

The Carolina Panthers may or may not have Cam Newton under center in 2020, but the quarterback reportedly “absolutely” expects to be there.

Writing about Newton’s unique situation, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports wrote Saturday that “Newton absolutely believes he will be a Carolina Panther in 2020, according to sources.”

There’s a big “but” here, though. As noted by Jones, Panthers owner David Tepper and rookie head coach Matt Rhule have not been able to speak about Newton’s future with the club “without offering a caveat or two.”

That’s been a consistent theme all winter long. Not surprisingly, it’s led to plenty of speculation that Newton is going to be shopped by the franchise whenever he’s cleared for football activities following foot surgery.

For what it’s worth, we recently dove into what Rhule brings to the Panthers and concluded Newton’s best shot to come back strong is with Carolina.
