The Cleveland Browns lost out on one of their top head-coaching candidates earlier on Monday when Mike McCarthy agreed to a deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

Turning the page from one former head coach to another, Cleveland has reportedly requested permission to speak with Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz about its head-coaching vacancy.

Most of the focus in Cleveland since the team fired Freddie Kitchens after one season has been on offensive-minded candidates to help young signal caller Baker Mayfield.

This would be a much different hire.

Schwartz, 53, has served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator for the past four seasons. That came after a one-year stint in the same role with the Buffalo Bills.

The longtime assistant is best known for spending five seasons as the Detroit Lions head coach from 2009-13, leading that organization to a 29-51 record with one playoff appearance.
