Report: Browns QB Brock Osweiler will not play this week

Cleveland Browns QB Brock Osweiler wants to be the team's starter in 2017.

In what has to be considered shocking news, the Cleveland Browns may very well be on the verge of naming rookie second-round pick DeShone Kizer the team’s starting quarterback.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter struggling veteran Brock Osweiler will not play in the team’s third preseason game this week. Instead, it looks like Kizer will get a vast majority of the reps.

In related news, Browns head coach Hue Jackson seemingly suggested Wednesday that the job is Kizer’s to lose.

“This morning, I informed our quarterbacks that DeShone will be our starter for the third preseason game against Tampa. He has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games,” Jackson said, via the team’s official website. “We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season.”

It’s surprising in that Osweiler seemed to have the lead in the quarterback competition before stinking it up big time against the New York Giants on Monday night.

Though, Kizer himself has been much more impressive during the preseason and camp. He tallied a 61.3 percent completion mark with two total touchdowns and zero interceptions in his first two NFL preseason games. For his part, Osweiler is completing less than 55 percent of his passes without a touchdown.
