The Cleveland Browns have been the antithesis of a well-run organization throughout the years. This has led to major turnovers within the team’s coaching staff recently.
When the Browns hired Mike Pettine to replace a one-and-done Rob Chudzinski following the 2013 season, it was their fourth head coaching hire in less than a decade.
That’s more head coaches than the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers have had since 1969.
Now comes this report from NFL Media’s Rand Getlin indicating that the feeling within the Browns organization is that Pettine’s last game as their head coach will be Sunday against the aforementioned Steelers.
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering Cleveland boasts a 10-21 record under Pettine and heads into Sunday’s action tied for the worst mark in the NFL.
A report earlier on New Year’s Day indicated that Pettine is set to fire his coaching staff should he remain the head coach following the team’s season finale. That should be reason enough to believe he’s on the outs.
While the Browns can’t be seen as a terribly attractive destination, there has been some buzz that Chip Kelly — recently fired by the Philadelphia Eagles — might be interested in coaching the team.
The whole idea about firing a lackluster head coach is perfectly fine. Though, it won’t do much if you don’t find an upgrade at that position. In this, the Browns have failed at every turn over the past decade-plus.
It’s high time they get it right. And with a ton of attractive candidates set to be bandied about in the coming weeks, there’s no excuse to blow this opportunity.
