Montoyo had a brief playing career, playing for the Montreal Expos in 1993. He’s worked in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization since 1997, working in the Minor League system a year before the Major League team had even debuted.
Following the 2015 season, he became Tampa’s third base coach, a position he held until being hired by Toronto.
Montoyo is inheriting a struggling club. The Blue Jays reached the ALCS in 2015 and 2016, but have struggled since. They went 76-86 in 2017 and 73-89 in 2019.
