After meeting with specialists in Los Angeles, Detroit Pistons star forward Blake Griffin is undergoing surgery on his left knee and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Griffin underwent surgery to address lingering pain in his knee and he’ll now undergo extensive rehabilitation following the arthroscopic surgery.
The six-time All-Star forward last played on Dec. 28 against the San Antonio Spurs. He experienced recurring soreness in the left knee, which he had surgery on this offseason, and played in just 18 games this season. Griffin averaged just 15.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, often looking slower and less explosive than in previous years.
He is under contract at $34.4 million this season and will carry a $36.8 million cap hit in 2020-’21. Griffin also holds a $38.9 million player option for the 201-’22 season.
Given Griffen’s massive contract and the team’s struggles this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Pistons moved forward with trade discussions involving star center Andre Drummond.
