Report: Alex Smith has had ‘close to half a dozen’ surgeries on infected leg

The gruesome broken leg that Alex Smith endured a few weeks back continues to haunt the Washington Redskins quarterback.

On Saturday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network shared some more details about the ongoing battle Smith is enduring after his leg became infected following the initial surgery.

Notably, Garafolo reports Smith has undergone “close to a half a dozen” surgeries since his initial injury and doctors have had to remove infected tissue, along with the plate that was inserted to help his leg heal.

The initial injury itself was incredibly traumatic. In addition to Smith suffering a compound fracture — meaning, bone punctured his skin — he also endured a spiral fracture, which resulted from twisting force on the sack that caused the injury in the first place.

To now be dealing with an infection that doesn’t want to go away is just heartbreaking. Smith is one of the most well-respected players in the NFL, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
