Jason Garrett: Al Golden interviewing for Cowboys’ DB coach vacancy

Former University of Miami head coach Al Golden is heading to Mobile, Ala. to meet up with Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett about the team’s vacant defensive backs coach position.

According to Ian Rapoport, via Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com, Golden is expected to be hired if the interview goes well, per team sources.

Golden has never before coached at the NFL level. He has spent the past 10 years as the head coach at Miami and Temple before that and was a defensive coordinator at Virginia and an assistant defensive coach before that at Boston College and Virginia.

If he is hired, it would be a significant step down but could also provide Golden with the platform from which to bounce back after such a disastrous end at Miami. He started the 2015 season on the hot seat and was finally fired after the worst loss in school history — a 58-0 shellacking at the hands of Clemson.

Though he’s never been a defensive backs coach, this could be the perfect opportunity for Golden to get the fresh start he needs.
