Report: 49ers will not cut Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick will remain with the San Francisco 49ers, who have no plans to cut him or ask him to cut his salary, per Jason Cole of Bleacher Report.

This report comes in the wake of the Denver Broncos taking Paxton Lynch No. 26 overall and officially pulling out of any trade talks regarding the disgruntled quarterback.

That San Francisco isn’t planning on cutting Kaepernick shouldn’t surprise anyone who has been following this story from its inception. The 49ers have loudly proclaimed their interest in keeping him to compete for the starting job in Chip Kelly’s offense.

Kaepernick originally asked for permission to seek a trade. The 49ers apparently granted that permission, given the fact that he ended up having meetings with John Elway at his home.

Ultimately, Kaepernick’s unwillingness to agree to a massive pay cut shot any deal with the Broncos to smithereens. Instead, Elway coughed up a third-round pick (No. 94 overall) to move up five places from No. 31 to No. 26 to land Lynch. Interestingly enough, the Broncos reportedly had Lynch rated even higher than the No. 1 overall pick, Jared Goff.

Back to the 49ers and Kaepernick, we are looking at a potentially ugly situation developing this summer.

First off, as Cole mentioned in his video piece, he’s nowhere near ready to play right now after three offseason surgeries. Also, on that note, have you seen how darn skinny he is right now (picture here)?

Once he does come back, though, will he be welcome in the locker room? NaVorro Bowman recently made it clear having Kaepernick on the roster this summer would be “a distraction” for the 49ers.

In reality, the best thing that could happen right now is that Kaepernick just lets bygones be bygones and gets his head fully into Kelly’s system so that when he is healthy he can rock it out of the gates. His talent could be a perfect fit in the fast-paced offense the 49ers are going to run, though accuracy issues could be his Achilles heel.

It’s still possible the 49ers could find a trade partner for Kaepernicks’ services. But at it seems more unlikely by the day.
