Report: 49ers granted permission to interview Tom Coughlin

Could Tom Coughlin be headed to the west coast to coach the San Francisco 49ers?

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the former head coach of the New York Giants is being looked at by the 49ers, who were granted permission to interview the two-time Super Bowl winner.

This comes as a pretty big surprise, considering most reports recently indicated the 49ers were darn close to hiring Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. Other candidates that have been mentioned include Mike Shanahan, Chip Kelly and Anthony Lynn.

The biggest thing all those other guys have in common is an inclination for innovative offense, which isn’t something anyone would associate with Coughlin.

However, even though it’s been a long time, Coughlin made his bones as an offensive coordinator at the University of Syracuse before coaching wide receivers for the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants before getting into the head coaching game.

Coughlin certainly possesses the big-name clout the 49ers desire. This will be interesting to track as things continue to play out in the coming days.
