Redskins rookie Derrius Guice diagnosed with sprained MCL

Washington rookie running back Derrius Guice

The Washington Redskins were hyped about rookie second-round pick Derrius Guice’s NFL debut Thursday night. He had looked great in camp and is considered the team’s likely starter heading into the regular season.

Unfortunately, Guice pulled up lame early in the game with that was initially described as a knee injury (more on that here).

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the initial diagnosis is that Guice suffered a sprained MCL. He’ll have an MRI later on Friday to confirm the extent of the injury.

Any time we’re talking about the knee, there’s concern about structural damage to either the ACL or MCL. It looks like Guice avoided that dreaded injury.

Unfortunately, this could sideline the running back for the remainder of the preseason and into the early part of the regular year. It all depends on the extent of the sprain.

Guice ended the evening against New England having put up 19 yards on six rush attempts.
