The Washington Redskins were the team that stepped up during the annual NFL meeting in Arizona on Monday.
The team announced that it has proposed a rule change that enables on-field officials to initiate instant replays for uncalled penalties.
“Specifically, the Redskins would like to amend the second section of Rule 15, which would make every play available for review – issued either through a coach’s challenge or from the officiating crew,” the team announced, via its official website.
This would be a dramatic change of philosophy for the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell had noted that judgment calls should not be a part of any potential rule changes.
This all comes on the heels of the controversial ending to the NFC Championship Game between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints back in January.
A non-call on a blatant pass interference against the Rams led to New Orleans dropping the game. Those close to the Saints were up in arms over the non-call.
Whether the Redskins’ proposal leads to anything concrete remains to be seen. But we wouldn’t bet on it.
