The Boston Red Sox did not get off to the best of starts Sunday against a horrible Baltimore Orioles squad at Fenway Park.
In fact, Baltimore found itself up 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Things changed rapidly. Boston put up three in the third and fourth innings combined before dropping six on the Orioles in the sixth.
Up 10-6 in the bottom of the seventh, MVP candidate Rafael Devers took the plate. What followed put the youngster in the Boston’s franchise record books.
Devers is now only the second player in Red Sox history to rack up 100-plus runs and 100-plus RBI in a single season before his 23rd birthday. The other player? None other than all-time great Ted Williams.
You can’t join any better company than that. Williams put up a .327 average with 31 homers and 145 RBI to go with 131 runs scored as a rookie in 1939.
Dever’s 2019 season might not end with such eye-opening numbers, but the dude continues to rake.
In just his second full season, Devers entered Sunday’s action hitting .327 with 26 homers, 97 RBI and 101 runs scored. He also leads the AL in hits (163) and doubles (44). We can add more to these totals after Sunday’s performance.
