Wednesday was another sad day in the baseball world. The Boston Red Sox announced that Minor League catcher Daniel Flores died “due to complications during treatment for cancer” at 17.

The team shared the sad news on Twitter. President Dave Dombrowski and assistant general manager Eddie Romero both released statements, as well.

Prior to signing with Boston, Flores was assessed by Ben Badler of Baseball America as “A 16-year-old switch-hitter, Flores is a strong, physical player (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) who draws superlative reviews for his outstanding defensive skills and at times has shown high-level offensive performance as well.”

Flores was signed by the club in July as MLB’s second-ranked international prospect.
