The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora on Tuesday night, announcing in a statement that they are moving on from their skipper following information regarding Cora’s role in the Houston Astros’ sign stealing.
In the statement, Red Sox owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner and CEO Sam Kennedy disclosed that the team held a meeting to discuss the Commissioner’s report.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred’s investigation into allegations of the Houston Astros electronic sign-stealing in 2018 found that Cora played a prominent role in the development and execution of the cheating tactics.
The Red Sox remain under MLB investigation for allegedly using technology to steal signs from opponents during the 2018 season. Cora is likely facing a lengthier suspension than the one-year ban former Astros manager AJ Hinch received.
As part of the team’s statement, Cora thanked the organization for his time with the team and said he mutually agreed to leave the organization so they could move forward without distractions.
Cora posted a 192-132 record in two seasons as Boston’s skipper and helped turn Boston into a contender, winning the World Series in his first season. The Red Sox posted an 84-78 record this past season.
