Rangers sign free agent reliever Will Smith

The Texas Rangers signed free agent reliever Will Smith to a one-year contract on Saturday.

The 33-year-old left-hander will join the club’s spring training facility on Saturday in Surprise, Ariz.

The Rangers designated infielder Mark Mathias for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Smith split last season with Atlanta and Houston, finishing 0-3 with a 3.97 ERA and five saves in 65 appearances.

He was an All-Star with San Francisco in 2019 and won World Series with the Braves in 2021 and Astros in 2022.

He is 31-34 with a 3.59 ERA and 91 saves in 513 games (17 starts), with 664 strikeouts in 553 2/3 innings with the Kansas City Royals (2012-13), Milwaukee Brewers (2014-16), Giants (2016, 2018-19), Braves (2020-22) and Astros.
