Rams make smart move to sit Todd Gurley in Week 17

Todd Gurley will not take the field when the Los Angeles Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

Head coach Sean McVay told reporters Friday that both Gurley and safety Lamarcus Joyner have been ruled out from playing in the team’s final regular-season game.

This is absolutely the right move. San Francisco has been a formidable opponent but the Rams have all the pieces in place to withstand their NFC West rival without Gurley. The emergence of veteran C.J. Anderson last weekend made this an easy decision.

And regardless of what happens on Sunday, the Rams are already locked into place as the NFC West champ. A win would lock them into the No. 2 seed, but getting that outcome isn’t as important to the team overall as having Gurley fully healthy for the playoff run.

Now that Gurley has been ruled out, we know he’ll end his 2018 season with 1,831 yards and 21 touchdowns from scrimmage.
