Philip Rivers: Chargers’ ‘sad’ situation in San Diego is ‘pretty gross’

Philip Rivers doesn’t know if the San Diego Chargers will be moving to Los Angeles after the 2016 season. But based on his words, the quarterback sees the writing on the wall.

“I know nothing,” Rivers said, per Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union Tribine. “But it’s what is shaping up to be a sad, sad ending to 55 years, if what could happen, happens. And I hate that. And it may not; shoot, maybe we’re here for another 55. I don’t know. I’m just saying, if it is, some of the way it’s coming to is pretty gross.”

This came after Rivers bluntly called the team’s Week 15 loss to the Oakland Raiders in San Diego “a road game.”

At this point, it sure doesn’t seem like there’s much hope that the Chargers will remain in San Diego. Any hope that it will happen stems from the fact that the Chargers have faced similar threats of moving in each of the last two seasons. But this year is different.

Instead of a potential stadium, one is already being built. The owners have approved the franchise’s lease in the Inglewood stadium, which you can read about here.

Additionally, Hail Mary efforts to get a stadium in San Diego have failed miserably.

The fans know it. The Chargers have one more home game, a Week 17 contest against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs probably won’t draw as many fans as the Raiders did, but certainly plenty will be in attendance.

Rivers is right. It’s a sad end.
