Philadelphia Eagles select Carson Wentz No. 2 overall in 2016 NFL Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles have selected North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz with the second pick of the NFL Draft.

Once the Eagles acquired the No. 2 pick from the Cleveland Browns, it became pretty clear that they were going to draft a quarterback. As soon as the Los Angeles Rams took Jared Goff, Wentz to Philly became a shoo-in.

While logic says that Wentz will be the starter, the Eagles’ quarterback situation is presently very cluttered. While the possibility of a Sam Bradford trade is strong, Wentz currently shares the Philadelphia quarterback depth chart with both Bradford and Chase Daniel. In this offseason alone, the Eagles have given Bradford a two-year, $36 million deal and Daniel a three-year, $21 million contract.

Wentz only played in seven games for North Dakota state in 2015 due to an injury, but he was highly effective. In those games, he threw for 1,651 yards with 17 touchdowns and only four interceptions. The 6-foot-6, 235 pound quarterback added 294 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

Wentz is the sixth non-FBS (or Division I) quarterback to be taken in the first round since the merger. He joins Dan Pastrorini (1971), Phil Simms (1979), Ken O’Brien (1983), Steve McNair (1995), and Joe Flacco (2008). All of the previous five made at least one Pro Bowl.
