Former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll addressed the media on Wednesday, mere hours after he was ousted as their head coach following 14 extremely successful seasons.

Seattle’s press release announcing the divorce indicated that it was a mutual parting of the ways.

“After thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise, we have amicably agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor,” Seahawks owner Jody Allen said in a statement.

About that? The 71-year-old Carroll seemed to have a different view of how things transpired behind the scenes following Sunday’s season-ending win over the Arizona Cardinals.

“I competed hard to be the coach, just so you know,” Carroll told reporters.

This seems to be more of a case of the Seahawks actually firing Carroll after his franchise-best tenure with the organization.

Carroll initially served as the New York Jets head coach in 1994. He was also the New England Patriots’ head man from 1997-1999 before they brought in Bill Belichick.

The head coach’s 14-year run in Seattle included 10 playoff appearances and a Lombardi Trophy. He’s the only head coach in franchise history to have led the team to a Super Bowl title.
