One college scouting director is not a fan of Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller quoted a college scouting director saying: “Go watch him against any good team and tell me how he did. He’s overrated.”
Given how Lynch performed against three of Memphis’ best opponents, it’s hard to argue too much with that.
None of those opponents would be considered world beaters, but they are good teams and Lynch certainly didn’t do much against them.
This is a problem for Lynch and certainly won’t go unnoticed by the NFL’s executives as the NFL Draft approaches. In Mel Kiper’s first mock draft (insider required), Lynch was projected to go 15th to the Los Angeles Rams. In his most recent mock draft, Miller projected Lynch to go fourth to the Dallas Cowboys and ranked Lynch as his 12th rated prospect in his most recent big board.
Quarterbacks tend to go high in drafts. The Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams all have definite quarterback needs and are all picking in the top 15 while a potential need exists for teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins.
Lynch’s overall numbers were fine, but looking at their track records, it’s hard to say that Paxton Lynch stacks up well to Jared Goff.
A few bad teams have holes at the quarterback position, but have other needs and will at least be considering filling those on draft day. Given Lynch’s poor recommendation and bad stats against the top teams on the schedule, it’s safe to say that teams will be at least hesitant to use a high pick on the Memphis quarterback.
