Patriots, mock draft

Could the New England Patriots be making room for another quarterback? Reportedly, they will release veteran backup Cody Kessler in a surprising move.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media shared the news Wednesday afternoon.

Kessler was slated to make $935,000 in 2020 with zero guaranteed money in the deal and would have been a free agent in 2021 if he wasn’t cut by the Patriots this offseason.

A former third-round pick out of USC, Kessler has made 12 career starts, going 2-10 in those games. Throughout his career, he’s completed 64.2% of his passes for 2,115 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Likely, he’ll land on his feet with a new team before training camp.

With Kessler out, the Patriots could be potentially angling for a certain veteran whose prospects have slimmed considerably in recent weeks. Then again, perhaps they follow our lead and use the 2020 NFL Draft to land the quarterback of the future.
